  Summer is winding down and
its end will soon bring us all to
the beginning of another new
and exciting school year at
South Bend.
The district has been buzzing
all summer long with the over
$5 million modernization
of the high school and the
building of the new play shed
behind the elementary school.
The project is moving along
wonderfully and we are still
on schedule to be completed
by August 25th.
We are also in the
process going to bid on the
modernization of the school
library. A 77 percent match
(gift) of state funds is too great
to pass up! That work should
be completed sometime in late
October or early November so
there will be some disruption
to the day to day operations,
but it will certainly be worth
the trouble when everything is
complete.
As we began to work on this
modernization, it became even
more evident how vital this
project was to avoiding major
costs down the road without
the help of the state. Many
areas of the school including
roof, electrical, plumbing and
heating were in even worse
shape than we imagined and
forty two years of wear and
tear was evident everywhere.
When these projects are
completed this fall, the South
Bend community will have,
for all intents and purposes,
a new high school with over
three quarters of the cost paid
for by the state.
While those projects are
certainly a positive for the
district, we too have been hit
by the economic downturn just
as all of you in the community
have been. Enrollment is
down a bit with many families
having to leave the area
to find other employment.
Enrollment drops, coupled
with the deep cuts the state
had to make to school districts,
has certainly made budgeting
a more difficult proposition for
us than in years past.
The school board and district
have worked hard to save
jobs and programs by taking
a conservative approach
to our spending beginning
early last year. While we are
making some tough decisions
and tightening our belts, we
believe that we have done a
good job of meeting the needs
of kids and programs with
this year’s budget under the
circumstances. From a school
perspective, we anticipate and
are planning for at least two

-three more years of budgetary
concerns as we all wait for the
economy to turn around.
While we need to be
conservative in our spending,
we still need to provide the
necessary skills and programs
for our kids to be successful
in life.
Some key additions to our
P–12 programs for
the 2009-10 year are:
1. Expansion of our Laptop
Computer Initiative down
through the first grade. We
now have laptops available
to students in classrooms

on rolling carts from grades
1-12, over 110 laptops total,
for student use. While laptop
computers in the classroom
are a big change for many of
us, to the kids of today, it is
what they know and how they
communicate. It is important
to remember that we need to
provide kids with the tools
that they need to be successful
in our new world, not our old
world.
2. Flexible alternative
school setting for grades 7-12
for the 2009-10 school year.
Not all kids fit well into the
normal school setting. Our
goal is to provide a program
that meets the needs of every
student who wishes to attend
or currently attends South
Bend. We want to allow each
of them the opportunity to
earn our diploma in a variety
of different ways that fit their
unique needs.
3. $175,000 Gates Foundation
grant funding for a
second year of our Early
Literacy program in the
north county. This grant has
provided us a chance to better
connect with area caregivers
and families to provide more
opportunities to provide a
positive start to school for all
kids. It has meshed well with
our B-3 program and provides
an opportunity for us to reach
many more kids and families
than ever before.
4. Retention of our K-12
counselor/psychologist. We
were all very excited to be
able to prioritize his position
and retain the counselor
despite of the state budget cuts
this year. We feel that this
position is vital to the success
and support of our kids.
As you can see, we have
much to be excited about for
the upcoming school year! A
newly remodeled high school,
a new play shed, a newly
remodeled library and the
student oriented programs
above are certainly great ways
to start off a school year!
We look forward to another
exciting school year and all
that it brings with it.
If you have any questions
about these or any other
school programs, please feel
free to call me at 875-6041 in
the district office. I will be
happy to help answer them.
My office door is always open
and I look forward to meeting
with you.
You have invested your most
precious asset with us, your
child, and we thank you for
your trust and support of the
South Bend School District.
We promise to do the
very best job that we can in
providing them a safe, caring
environment as well as a
quality education.

Yours in Education,

Mike Morris
