Dear Parents and Students,
          On behalf of the elementary staff, I would like to welcome you to Chauncey Davis Elementary for the 2006-2007 school year.   We have a wonderful team and many exciting educational opportunities ahead.  This school year our primary teachers (K-3) will be using the Open Court reading series, Everyday Mathematics and FOSS science kits. Our intermediate teachers (4-6) will be using the Open Court reading series, Houghton Mifflin Mathematics, McDougal Littell mathematics, and FOSS science kits.  In addition, all teachers use Accelerated Reader to provide developmentally appropriate practice. Assessment tools include DIBLES (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment).
          We believe that the success of our school and students relies on great teachers, good curriculum and collaboration among teachers, parents and students.  We are in this together and can only make a difference if we are working as a team.  We want to do what is developmentally best for all children academically, socially and emotionally.
This handbook can be referred to for an understanding of the policies, regulations, and services we provide at Chauncey Davis Elementary.  Your suggestions are always welcome.  Please feel free to call the school if you have any questions or concerns.
          The children of South Bend are our most precious commodity and we promise to do the best job that we can in taking safe care of them and providing them with a positive education experience.
